Damascus Islamic Unity Conference; Islam Calls for Unity Among Nations

According to Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), Minister of Religious Endowments (Awqaf) Mohmmad Abdul-Sattar al-Sayyid has said God in the Holy Quran ordered us to strive for unity and shun disunity.

Speaking before the 6th Conference on Proximity among Islamic Schools of Thought held in Damascus on Sunday, al-Sayyid said "Islam has allowed multiplicity within unity."

The two day conference will discuss theoretical and practical conceptions of Islamic unity in the Holy Quran and the Sunna and means to confront dangers threatening Muslim unity.

Al-Sayyid called for unifying efforts to confront plots targeting the Islamic nation. He said a human Islamic discourse is required to face attempts aimed to obliterate the identity of the Islamic nation.

Grand Mufti of Syria Ahmad Badr Eddin Hassoun called to overcome the differences among members of the nation of Islam and activate dialogue and cooperation to face the enemies.

Mar Ignatios Hazim IV of Antioch and all the East for Roman Orthodox said Muslims and Christians will always be brothers and will stay together in the face of challenges.

Participants at the Conference said Islamic unity is a red line nobody would be allowed to cross.

They called upon Islamic scholars to assume responsibility to find radical solutions to divisions among Muslims.

An Islamic rather than sectarian discourse should be adopted in approaching Muslims' issues.

The conference is organized by Ministry of Awqaf in cooperation with the World Assembly for Proximity among Islamic Schools of Thought with a wide participation from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Iran.
