Over 2 Million Muslims Urged to Change Shape of British Politics

Britain’s two million Muslim population is being urged to help change the face of British politics by using their vote at next month’s general election.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said that with a record of at least 146 MPs stepping down and the very real prospect of a ‘hung parliament,’ Muslims have the chance to hold their elected representatives to account.

“It is very important for Muslims to vote on issues that concern us as citizens. As a community we still face issues that hamper our progress,” the MCB said.

“Britain’s proud tradition of civil liberties are being eroded and are affecting Muslims disproportionately,” it warned, specifically pointing out that barriers were faced by young people and women.

In the first instance, Muslims were urged to ensure that they were registered to vote on May 6, with the closing day approaching on April 20.

“Challenge your prospective candidates to make sure anti-Muslim hatred and Islamophobia are treated with the seriousness they deserve,” MCB said in its advice to Muslims.

“Make sure you vote for candidates who appreciate that our community has made huge contributions to this country and will fight to change the view that our traditions and faith are still seen as foreign and alien,” said a copy of the advice.

Other issues include changing British policies that seek to appease Israel’s contempt for international law and human rights violations against the Palestinians.

Mosques across Britain are also using Friday prayers to urge Muslims to exercise their democratic rights and vote in the country’s general election.

The call comes after a statement was signed by a range of Muslim scholars from diverse theological traditions that sets out a compelling case for Muslims to cast their votes.
