Islam in the Media: Are we getting it right?

Join us to discuss UK media’s coverage of Islam and Muslim communities, and explore whether in an environment of global conflict and growing Islamophobia, nuanced and fair reporting can break down prejudice.

A panel of broadcasters and expert commentators will examine the portrayal of Islam and Muslims and ask how journalists and broadcasters can confront stereotypes and challenge misconceptions.

Confirmed Speakers

  • Dr Myriam Francois is a writer, broadcaster and academic with a focus on current affairs, the Middle East and Islam. She is currently an international news correspondent for TRT World, and is a regular contributor to the New StatesmanThe Telegraph and Middle East Eye. She has presented a number of programs for the BBC, including ‘The Muslim Pound’, and is currently a Research Associate at the Centre of Islamic Studies at SOAS University, where her research focuses on British Muslim integration issues.
  • Tarek Osman is an author of books including Islamism, essayist and broadcaster, and Political Councillor for the Arab World at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
  • Fatima Salaria is Commissioning Editor for Religion and Ethics at the BBC. Her recent commissions have included the BAFTA winning Muslims Like Us, the recent Partition Season including Anita Rani’s My Family and Partition on BBC1 and Dangerous Borders – A journey through India and Pakistan.
  • Miqdaad Versi is Assistant Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain. He is a campaigner for responsible reporting in the media and has been called “The man correcting stories about Muslims” by the BBC after eliciting tens of apologies from national media outlets. He is a regular columnist for the Guardian and Independent.

The event is free to attend but you must register for tickets in advance. There will be a complimentary drinks reception before and after the panel discussion. Please note that all guests must bring a form of identification and may be subject to a random bag search. You should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure you have time to pass through check-in and security.
