While many European universities, Leiden included, have a proud tradition of research into Islamic studies, a topical and thematic focus on Shiʿi Islam in all its dispensation remains a desideratum. The primary objective of LUSSI is to address this lacuna by promoting the study of Shiʿism in all its expressions and disciplinarian approach through lectures and seminars, conferences and workshops, public debates and discussion fora, and dedicated studies.

The Leiden University Shiʿi Studies Initiative (LUSSI) is part of LUCIS.

Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (LUCIS)

Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (LUCIS) is an interfaculty knowledge center offering a multidisciplinary and comparative view on Islam and Muslim societies.

A full and nuanced understanding of Islam and Muslim societies is essential to navigate today’s complex globalised world. Drawing upon Leiden University’s long tradition and unparalleled resources in Islamic studies, LUCIS is the Netherlands’ premier platform for advancing that understanding.

To give shape to the research themes of LUCIS, eight programs have been designed for the next period of funding to boost interfaculty and interdisciplinary cooperation and to widen the involvement of LUCIS members.

1. Law and governance in Muslim societies

2. Shiʿi studies

3. Historical Muslim societies

4. Islam in Southeast Asia

5. Islam in Central Asia

6. Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa

7. Islam in North Africa

8. Islam in the West
