Embracing The Muslim Community: The Revert Experience

This event was a collaboration between The Revert Hub and the Islamic Society at SOAS and took place on the 1st of February 2018 in the Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre, SOAS, London. It was a memorable and enjoyable evening with 3 really interesting perspectives from Muslim reverts discussing their experience of embracing Islam. The guest speaker, Abdullah al Andalusi, delivered a talk on the experiences and challenges of Muslim converts in the West. The event chaired and hosted by Lauren Booth who also gave an insight into her own personal journey in Islam. There was a Q&A session at the end.

About Speakers

  • Abdullah al Andalusi is an international speaker, thinker and intellectual activist for Islam and Muslim affairs. He has written and spoken extensively on Islamic theology, history and politics. Abdullah has appeared on various TV channels, radio stations and has been invited to speak at many events. Abdullah has spoken at the Oxford Union and has debated many high profile individuals. Abdullah embraced Islam as a teenager and is from a mixed Portuguese and North African background.
  • Lauren Booth is a journalist and broadcaster who has worked for The Evening Standard and New Statesman as well as presenting on TV stations including the Islam Channel, Press TV and Al Jazeera. Lauren has spoken at many high profile debates and events and has been involved in various charity work and activism. Lauren embraced Islam in 2010.

'The Revert Hub' was set up for those that have converted to the faith of Islam to help them in both their spiritual and social journey after becoming Muslim. The research and interactions with these individuals and the wider Muslim community has shown that some of those that have chosen to embrace the faith of Islam are often the only Muslim in the family and their social circle, or they may be part of a Muslim family but with little interaction or links with the Muslim community. 'The Revert Hub' was set up to provide a wider support network, help integrate individuals into the wider Muslim community, enhance the social experience of new Muslims and to be there to assist in times of need.
