Islam in the Modern World is an accredited degree program of Theology and Religious Studies. After successful completion of this program, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).

The Master’s in Islam in the Modern World provides advanced knowledge in the field of Islamic studies and insight into contemporary issues related to Islam. The program offers a unique preparation for engaging with debates and policies concerning the processes defining the place of Muslims and Islam in modern societies, and is embedded in a broad range of research projects related to Islam in Europe, the historical tradition, reformism and modernity, as well as the history of Orientalism.

Program overview

The Islam in the Modern World program consists of two core courses, one covering debates concerning the traditional religious sources of Islam and the other key issues in Islamic studies, a broad range of electives and a Master’s thesis.
