The Centre for Islamic Archaeology, based in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS), University of Exeter, is excited to announce our first Global Islamic Archaeology Showcase.  This is a free online event, initiated and organized by several of the center’s PhD candidates, which aims to bring together early career researchers who are working within the field of Islamic archaeology regardless of geographical or chronological focus.

We are privileged to provide a platform for those in the early years of their academic careers to share their research and to connect with scholars at all levels of their careers, and look forward to creating a wider network of scholars from around the world. We welcome papers from Ph.D. students and Early Career Researchers, as well as those studying a Masters by Research, whose focus is Islamic archaeology and material culture in the broadest sense, from Brazil to Azerbaijan, Mali to Japan.

This conference is therefore intended as an opportunity to utilize this time in lockdown, a time when many conferences have been cancelled, fieldwork postponed and scholars isolated and unmotivated, to explore new ways of working within academia and to bring disparate scholars together, helping to bridge the continental isolation that has often happened within the field of archaeology and in so doing inspire greater collaboration.
