This course examines the history and presence of Islam in the United States, from the colonial period to the present. We will discuss issues related to Muslim American identity, community, and culture, as well as representations of Islam and Muslims in U.S. media and popular culture. Course texts will highlight the diverse experiences of Muslim Americans — indigenous, immigrant, convert, and others — particularly as they relate to questions of race, citizenship, and belonging.
