WAVE Conference Urges All Governments to Condemn Extremism
The two-day WAVE conference kicked off work in Tehran on Tuesday and ended Wednesday evening.

The conference came in the aftermath of a last year proposal by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during his address to the UN General Assembly meeting in New York on September 25, 2013, which received the approval of the UNGA after being endorsed by an overwhelming majority of the member states on December 18, 2013.

Yesterday and during his address to the openning of the 1st WAVE conference, President Rouhani proposed that December 18 be named as the International Day against Violence and Extremism.

Also, the participants in the Tehran conference welcomed the proposal in their final statement, and underscored the necessity for the world states, politicians and religious leaders to condemn terrorism, violence and extremism in all forms.

They also underlined the necessity for adopting measures to eliminate poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment as the main sources feeding extremism.

The participants also urged the world states to prevent the trafficking of terrorists and radicalized groups at their borders and take serious steps to stop their infiltration on their territories.

Also during his inaugural address yesterday, the Iranian president said, "A world free of violence is materialized when the governments cooperate with each other and have coordinated policy-making and if so, the extremist groups will be marginalized."

He underlined the necessity for cooperation among the regional governments to uproot violence and extremism, and said, "The roots of violence can be dried up in the region through cooperation among governments."

Meantime Rouhani warned against the meddling of the trans-regional powers, saying that their intrusion in regional affairs only worsens the status quo.

He further demanded political, economic, social, cultural and educational development in the regional nations as well as religious tolerance and broadening inter-state and international economic ties and cooperation as the vital prerequisites for eradicating extremism and terrorism.

Zarif announced on Tuesday that his ministry would pursue implementation of the anti-terrorism and anti-extremism proposals made by President Hassan Rouhani at the first international conference on 'World Against Violence and Extremism' in Tehran and other international meetings.

"We will pursue Mr. Rouhani's proposals in different international meetings, including this meeting, and God willing we will follow up (his) viewpoints at the UN and other international bodies in a bid to achieve our common goal that is fighting against extremism and violence as well as campaigning against the anti-Islam and anti-human moves …," Zarif told reporters in Tehran on the sidelines of his trilateral meeting with the Iraqi and Syrian foreign ministers who visited Iran to participate in the WAVE conference.
