The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognized research university. Academic diversity and high quality are fundamental for us. UiB is the most cited university in Norway.

The Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at the Department of Archaeology, History, Culture Studies and Religion of UiB was set up in spring 2008. Its purpose is to provide a forum for researchers at the Department and outside, working in the relevant thematic and regional fields from South Africa in the south to Iran and Afghanistan in the north.

Research on the Middle East and Africa is extensive at the department and in Bergen, and the group will focus on several main areas each of which comprises a number of junior and senior researchers in Bergen. The center organizes a PhD seminar in Middle Eastern studies, involving candidates from a variety of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. The center hosts manuscript presentations, joint meetings, full-day thematic seminars, etc. as part of the seminar.
